Custom software development
Bespoke software built around your processes, not the other way round: analysis, architecture, development and long-term evolution, with a single team accountable for the result.
Software should fit your processes, not the other way round
Almost every company reaches a point where standard tools are no longer enough: spreadsheets acting as a management system, data entered twice in systems that do not talk to each other, a package bought years ago that is now used out of habit rather than choice. The work bends to the tool, instead of the other way round.
Custom software starts from the opposite problem: we begin with how you work and what you really need, and build the tool around it. Not a generic product forced to fit, but an application that mirrors your processes and can grow with you.
We are a software house based in Bologna, Italy, and we build bespoke software for businesses locally and across Italy: from the first analysis to architecture, from development to release, and on to evolution over the years.
When it pays off, and when it does not
Custom software is not always the right answer, and we prefer to say so upfront. It pays off when:
- the process you want to support is specific to your company, or is exactly what sets you apart from competitors;
- existing products force you into workarounds, double data entry and manual exports;
- you need integrations with management systems, ERPs, e-commerce or partner systems that a closed package does not allow;
- you have software that works but has become hard to evolve, and replacing it with a standard product would mean losing what makes it useful.
If an off-the-shelf product covers your need well, it is usually better to use it and, at most, connect it to the rest of your systems. We tell you frankly during the analysis.
What we build
"Custom software" is a broad label. In practice, our projects almost always fall into these areas:
-
Custom management software. Applications that run a business process end to end: orders, inventory, production, support, back office. We can start from scratch, from our modular foundation Pandora, or from an existing system to modernise.
-
Web apps and B2B portals. Reserved areas for customers and resellers, configurators, dashboards and web platforms that must handle real users, real data and years of evolution.
-
Mobile apps for Android and iOS. Hybrid business apps from a single codebase, for sales teams, field work or your customers.
-
System, ERP and API integration. Making ERPs, CRMs, e-commerce and internal applications talk to each other, in real time and without manual steps.
-
AI agents and intelligent integrations. Automations and AI assistants connected to your data and APIs, with control over permissions and security.
-
Data pipelines and ETL. Processes that import, validate and transform large data volumes every day, with no manual intervention.
How we work
-
Discovery and analysis. We start from your processes, not the technology: who uses the software, to do what, with which data and which surrounding systems. The outcome is a clear scope and an estimate broken into phases.
-
Architecture. We choose the stack based on the problem and the context: cloud, on-premise or hybrid, with attention to security, to where the data lives and to what the system will cost to maintain over the years.
-
Iterative development. We release early and often, so you see the software grow and can change course before it becomes expensive to do so.
-
Quality and automated releases. Automated tests, code review, code quality analysis and release pipelines: every deploy is repeatable, not an event to fear.
-
Evolution over time. After release we stay alongside you with a maintenance and evolution contract, because useful software never stops changing.
Real cases
Financial advisory platforms โ Fintech
One of our clients builds platforms used by banks and insurers to advise their customers on investments, policies and real estate. We have worked with their team for more than 5 years: new features, reviews of existing applications and performance work when volumes demand it.
Modernising a management system โ ERP
A management system with several modules in different technologies, different installations for each customer and manual releases. We defined a simplification plan, rewrote the critical modules and automated build and deploy: today the client manages 20+ components in a unified way. More detail on the custom management software page.
AI-powered CV matching โ Brainy Labs
An internal tool that reads CVs in any format, extracts skills and experience and compares them with open positions, returning a shortlist ranked by fit. An example of AI automation applied to a real process.

Frequently asked questions
Custom software or an off-the-shelf product?+
It depends on how specific the process is to your company. If an off-the-shelf product covers the need well, it is usually the better choice, integrated with your other systems where needed. Custom software makes sense when the process is a competitive advantage, when existing products force you into workarounds and double data entry, or when you need integrations a closed package does not allow. We tell you frankly during the analysis, even when the answer is not to build.
How much does custom software cost?+
It depends on what it has to do: number of features, roles and permissions, integrations with existing systems, data volumes, security requirements. After an initial analysis we present an estimate broken down into phases, so you know where time and budget go before starting. When the project is a management system, starting from our Pandora foundation reduces time and cost compared with building from scratch.
How long does it take to get a quote?+
Roughly 2 to 4 weeks: a first introductory call, a couple of weeks to surface questions and doubts, a second in-depth call and then the estimate. That is the time it takes to propose a scope and numbers you can actually work with.
Can you take over software built by someone else?+
Yes, it happens often. We study the code, assess its state and continue development while keeping it consistent and stable. If the system has become hard to evolve, we define a gradual modernisation plan, without stopping operations and without rewriting everything when it is not needed.
What happens after release?+
Release is the beginning, not the end. We usually agree a tailored maintenance and evolution contract with a yearly pool of dedicated hours: fixes, security updates, new features and monitoring. That keeps the software running, up to date and secure over time.
Do you also handle UX/UI design?+
We have no in-house designers: when a project needs in-depth UX/UI work we collaborate with trusted professionals. Our focus is application solidity: architecture, data, integrations, security and performance.
Do you only work with companies in Bologna?+
We are a software house based in Bologna and enjoy working with local companies, but we collaborate with clients all over Italy. Most of the work runs effectively remotely, with in-person meetings when needed.
